The short answer is that tungsten carbide resists scratching better than almost anything else you can reasonably wear on a finger — but “scratch-proof” and “scratch-resistant” are not the same claim, and the difference matters when you are choosing a band you intend to keep.
Where tungsten sits on the hardness scale
Jewellers measure scratch resistance with the Mohs scale, where talc is 1 and diamond is 10. Tungsten carbide lands around 8 to 9. For comparison, hardened steel is roughly 7, titanium is about 6, and the gold and silver used in jewelry sit near 2.5 to 4. That gap is the whole story. The keys in your pocket, a granite worktop, a car door, a dumbbell bar — none of them are hard enough to leave a mark on tungsten carbide.
This is why a tungsten band still looks like new after years of the wear that turns a gold band cloudy and soft-edged. The mirror polish is not a coating on silver tungsten; it is the surface of the material itself, so there is no thin finish to wear through.
What actually does scratch it
Only something harder will mark it, and in practice that is a short list: diamond, sapphire and other corundum, silicon carbide, and some industrial ceramics. If you wear a diamond engagement ring stacked directly against a tungsten band, the diamond will win over time. Storing rings loose in a box where they knock against each other is the other common culprit.
The important exception: plated colors
Black and blue tungsten rings are not solid black or blue metal. They are a silver tungsten carbide core with a vacuum-deposited colored finish. That finish is genuinely tough and highly scratch-resistant, but it is a surface layer, and surface layers can eventually show wear at the edges on a ring worn hard every day. Silver tungsten has no such layer, which is why it is the most forgiving choice for trades, gym work, or anyone who simply never takes a ring off.
If you want color and maximum durability at once, a common compromise is a silver exterior with the color used only on the inner band or in the engraved detail, where it is protected from contact.
What this means when you buy
Judge a tungsten ring on the finish you will actually see in five years, not on the day it arrives. A polished silver tungsten band is the safest long-term bet. A brushed or matte silver finish hides the fine surface haze of daily life even better. A plated color is a style decision that trades a little longevity for a look you may want more.
The engraving follows the same logic. Laser engraving cuts into the tungsten itself rather than sitting on top of it, so the detail survives exactly as long as the ring does.
Design a ring whose engraving will still be crisp in twenty years.
